  1. The first attempt at introducing Internet in Nigeria was made through the UNESCO sponsored RINAF project, in 1995. At one of the several workshops that were held to propagate the idea of the Internet, the Nigeria Internet Group (NIG) was formed as a non-profit, non-governmental organisation with the primary aim and objective of promoting and facilitating access to the Internet in Nigeria. The Internet became a reality in Nigeria in the late 90's.Obafemi Awolowo University was the first university in Nigeria to have its own VSAT internet link

  3. The internet a distinctive device in information communication came into Nigeria vividly in year 1995 but was not really into full activity until the year 1995 when the internet was first tested in the University(Obafemi Awolowo University)Today the internet is all over the place with the wireless lan, with the aid of hardworking researchers it keeps improving. Now we see the internet in our houses receiving door to door service whereby we get information and buy things online even without leaving our houses.

  5. the history of internet started as far back in

Internet started fully in July 1997 through the help of a PHD student of electrical engineering at the Rivers state university of science and technology who saw the need for students to interact with each other. He and his friends popularise Internet in Nigeria. He formed the Internet society of Nigeria. He saw the importance of the Internet, that was why He introduce a friend who could use the Internet so well, together with other friends made the Internet well known in Nigeria. The president of the Internet society chapter in Nigeria is professor Thomas Chukwuemeka Nwodo. These formed the basics of Internet in Nigeria and since then the Internet has greatly improved.

  7. The notable attempt at introducing internet into the country was in 1995 it was a programme aimed at bringing the 'Almighty' Internet into Nigeria. It is without doubt that Internet had existed before this period. This progarmme was sponsored by the United Nations Educational,Scientific and Cultural Organization [UNESCO] . All this happened in 1995.
In the late 1990's Obafemi Awolowo University Ife became the first tertiary institution to have the internet.
And Now the internet has become what almost every Nigerian in one way or another has had the preveledge to work on. It's AWESOME!!!

  11. The year 1995 marked the 1st trial of introducing internet in Nigeria and this was made possible by UNESCO sponsored by RINAF project.Later, a group called Nigeria's Internet Group(NIG)was formed during one of the workshops held to introduce the idea of internet. It was a non-profit and non-governmental organization with the aim of promoting internet in Nigeria.
Between 1996-2000(or towards the end of the 90's) many internet service providers came up like Linkserve,Cyberspace,Skannet, etc.
By 2001, ISP's in Nigeria began having problems. A committee was formed to cut down the cost of internet access and it was successful. The idea of internet exchange point was 1st discussed at a meeting held in Sheraton hotel.
By 2003, the 1st internet exchange point in Nigeria came to life.
By 2005, Ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo in November, directed the Nigerian Communications Commission(NCC) to ensure that the nation gets its own Internet Exchange Point.

  12. It all started in 1995 in the Obafemi Awolowo University where the internet was first used, the pioneer of this event was brought about by the UNESCO. According to International Telecommunication, Nigeria occupies one of the most unenviable positions in Internet Service Provision in Africa. In the African Telecommunications published in May 1998, Nigeria is not only the least developed in terms of internet usage but she is also at the bottom line in terms of Internet hosts.

These efforts were successful Internet Service Providers of Nigeria (ISPAN). Lanre Ajayi of PINET, one of the pioneer ISPs in Nigeria, played an important role in the establishment of both NIG and ISPAN. April 2005 ISPAN started discussion on the setting up of Lagos Internet Exchange (LagosIX), which was expected to be managed by an independent entity to be setup by ISPAN.An IXP setup committee was constituted to work with the various structures that was in place, as well as adding as appropriate. The committee members were Ndukwe Kalu (ISPAN), Ike Nnamani (Medallion Communications), Tosin Oni (Interconnect Nigeria, ICN), Femi Adelamo (Emperion WA), O.T Abiodun (NITEL), Abubakar Yakubu (NCC) and Chris Agha (NCC), including Sam Adeleke of Digitek Teevee Ltd .The Board of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) approved a proposal to partly fund the setting-up of Internet exchange Points (IXPs) in Nigeria, with a collaboration between NCC and ISPAN. The IXPN will operate from NECOM House (Marina, Lagos) as its main location; with sub-locations at Victoria Island, Ikeja, Ibadan, Port Harcourt, Abuja, Enugu, Kano & Maiduguri.. As the consultant to NCC on the IXPN setup.
This was how internet started in Nigeria and till now it is existing and very much alive.

Initially there were only 8 companies involved in the initiative, in June a meeting was held at the Sheraton Hotel. This meeting was very well attended and attracted the majority of ISPs in Nigeria, this later transformed into the formation of the Internet Service Providers of Nigeria (ISPAN). Lanre Ajayi of PINET, one of the pioneer ISPs in Nigeria, played an important role in the establishment of both NIG and ISPAN. The idea of an Internet exchange point was first discussed at this meeting but the level of suspicion between ISPs was very high and so the group at the meeting decided that it would be necessary to hold a workshop aimed at educating the ISPs on issues of co-operation and specifically the benefits of Internet Exchange points.

  21. OGUNDLAPO OLAWUNMI MARY 09BE08969 Before the wide spread of internetworking (802.1) that led to the Internet, most communication networks were limited by their nature to only allow communications between the stations on the local network and the prevalent computer networking method was based on the central mainframe computer model. Several research programs began to explore and articulate principles of networking between physically separate networks, leading to the development of the packet switching model of digital networking. The research led to the development of several packet-switched networking solutions in the late 1960s and 1970s, including ARPANET and the X.25 protocols. Additionally, public access and hobbyist networking systems grew in popularity, including unix-to-unix copy (UUCP) and FidoNet. They were however still disjointed separate networks, served only by limited gateways between networks. This led to the application of packet switching to develop a protocol for internetworking, where multiple different networks could be joined together into a super-framework of networks. This spread of internetworking began to form into the idea of a global network that would be called the Internet, based on standardized protocols officially implemented in 1982. Adoption and interconnection occurred quickly across the advanced telecommunication networks of the western world, and then began to penetrate into the rest of the world as it became the de-facto international standard for the global network. However, the disparity of growth between advanced nations and the third-world countries led to a digital divide that is still a concern today. But despite this, the Internet continues to grow, driven by commerce, greater amounts of online information and knowledge and social networking known as Web 2.0.

Nigeria internet group (NIG),a Non Governmental Organization dedicated to the promotion and growth of the Internet in Nigeria was later formed to promote this cause. However, the first university to make use of the internet was the Obafemi Awolowo University.
Since then, Nigeria’s Internet sector has been hindered by the country’s underdeveloped and unreliable fixed-line infrastructure, but this is changing as competition intensifies and new technologies are able to deliver wireless broadband access.

The history of internet began in 1995 by a workshop put together by RINAF and financially backed up by UNESCO.
Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is already carrying the bulk of Nigeria’s international voice traffic. The current deployment of the country’s first Next Generation Networks (NGN) will drive further convergence of voice, data and video/TV, enabling the provision of triple-play services that will ultimately also involve the country’s already competitive broadcasting sector. It started in Obafemi Awolowo University(OAU)where it was used and ever since became known in other parts of Nigeria.

The Nigerian Internet initiative started with the effort of the Nigerian Internet group by late 1994. During this period the only access to the Internet was Nigerian Telecomms Ltd (Nitel) leased acts which was then very expensive. The pressure was therefore put on Nitel to build the infrastructural Backbone to make this service more accessible and relatively cheaper to make the effort and awareness drive worth while.
This consideration based on the economic viability and the peoples need to be part of the global happening make Nitel to conclude all arrangements and by the end of 1997 provided and Internet backbone of 2 Mbps Bandwidth available. Immediately, five Point of Presence were strategically located within the country

As a PHD student in the Electrical Engineering Department of the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST), Port Harcourt (Nigeria), he urgently required some data/bibliography/documentation for his research programs. He therefore contacted a friend who was already exposed to the Internet facility for over a yea

The first attempt to introduce the internet to Nigeria was in the year 1995 by United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). This was done during a workshop held to introduce the idea of internet to the country. Nigeria’s internet Group (NIG) finally launched the internet in Nigeria which was first used in Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU). As at then internet connectivity in the country was quite poor with low bandwidths and slow responses but as time went by, internet services in the country began to get better and better to what we have now in the country. Networks with higher bandwidths and even wireless networks have also been introduced to the country. Presently, internet has become a ruling part of almost every Nigerian’s everyday life.

The history of internet in Nigeria started in the late 1990's. The immense contribution of the then military ruler;General Olusegun Obasanjo is still appreciated. A center was created in July 1997 by some group of people and the welcome visit of Dr Vint Cerf who owns the idea behind the TCP/IP paved way for the actualization of internet in Nigeria. Internet in Nigeria was also brought about by a student of electrical engineering who needed some relevant and vital information on his project and in his desperate search for his research resources he came about the necessity of internet in nigeria.

  53. The conception of the internet in Nigeria came forth by a group of friends in July 1997.This was because there was an urgent need for a PHD student who was doing research to find the Bibliography of his thesis. He was a PHD student in the Electrical Engineering Department of the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST), Port Harcourt, his plans fell through when he saw that he could not get any material for his bibliography. He sought solutions from one of his colleagues and this colleague referred him to another Colleague who had been surfing the Net a year earlier that was 1996. The Internet offers a very wide range of information to its users in any field at all. As the Internet was able to provide answers to his possible solutions, he was thrilled by this invention and he thought of how life would be worth living if people knew about the internet and took advantage of it. Since the search for the material was successful, the group of friends decided to set up a Chapter in Nigeria that would facilitate the use of Internet in Nigeria. Some other friends later joined-in to establish the Chapter and put the Internet to use. Other people also showed interest and began to use the Internet. Pioneer member include Dr. Vint Cerf. of ISOC in USA, the co-inventor of the computer networking protocol, TCP/IP which is the Internet Communication Language... This conception has lead to a vast growth of Internet in our nation Nigeria.

  68. Internet is a way of collecting information as far as the information is published into the net. We can explain the Internet reality by making a comparison with the computer system. The web is like a very high number of files of different gender, different interests, different areas, located in different parts of the world, connected to each other. There is no central unit that co-ordinates the function, each unit is autonomous and can interline and collect information from any required one.The Internet began in the end of the 1960’s when the United States Department of Defense, decided to help scientists and researchers from different areas work together by funding the development of data network that would allow networked computers communicate efficiently. The idea was to share scarce and expensive computers and their files. Thirty years later, the Internet has come a long way with more than 150 million users linked up world wide: the majority of the users, however are resident in the developed countries. Subsequent advances in data network and telematics in the last decade has revolutionized the net. in Nigeria however, the advent of the internet can be traced to the early 1995, where UNESCO, which was backed by RINAF that year, was established. and it was used by the obafemi awolowo university, in the same year, and after which the exchange in Nigerian internet communication came into proper use in 2003, and two years later, it got its own internet exchange point which was controlled by the then president of the federation. and in 2009, it gained a country name and code known as ng.com.
