  1. NIGERIA’S advertising business has witnessed tremendous growth especially in recent times.Though the business is witnessing colossal growth, the industry, like most business sectors of the economy, had its humble beginning rooted in colonial history, advertising developmnt could be traced to abou 1928 with the birth of West African Publicity Limited. An off shoot of UAC, the company was set up to catter for the marketing activities of the colonial masters in both Nigeria and West Africa. This compny was later to transform to a full fledged advertising firm in 1929 known as Lintas with two other subsidaries newly Afromedia, the outdoor medium and Pearl/Dean, the cinema arm. With the setting up of the companies then headed by expertriates.By the later 1970’s however, two ambitious agencies, Rosabel Advertising and Insight Communication, sprang up. The coming of the two agencies which till today are still doing very well.
APCON the regulating body in the practice of advertising in the country, started operation in 1990 with the employment of the pioneer registrar in the person of Dr Charles Okigbo. The era of economic restructuring and liberalization opened up the Nigerian business to global economy. Foreign investments started flowing into the economy the expatriates who once left the shores of the land due to the indigenization policy gradually returned. And with them, the boom in economy. Aside, privatization of mass communication medium in the 1990’s also witnessed the setting up of private owned media houses which are platforms for advertisement placements.

  2. Previously advertising had existed allover the world, but advertising in Nigeria could be dated to have started officially with Rev. Henry Townsend's Newspaper called Iwe Iroyin in 1859. This particular newspaper carried advertisements on births and other social events.
Furthermore, other newspapers established after Iwe Iroyin devoted some pages to adverts exclusively.
Advertising began to grow and blossom in Nigeria with the emergence of the Television and Radio.
Between 1960 and 1970 there was a rush of foreign advertising investors in Nigeria. Some of them include Afro-media and Sun Rise.
In other to cub or regulate the activities of these agencies, there was the enactment of the Nigerian Enterprise Promotion Decree of 1972 which gave impetus to the fact that only Nigerians should own and control these agencies.
APCON was established by decree 55 of 1988 as the Apex regulatory boby for advertising practice in Nigeria.

Advertising began in the colonial times and could be traced to have started in 1928 with the birth of West African Publicity Limited.Derived from UAC,it was established to cater for the needs of the colonial masters in Nigeria and West Africa. This company later became an advertising agency in 1929 named Lintas with two other subsidiaries newly Afromedia, the outdoor medium and Pearl/Dean, the cinema arm.In the 1950's new advertising agencies emerged. The medium of advertising was in its infancy in those days Federal Government owned National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) where he only television stations that operated in the four regions of East, West, North and later midwest.
With the increase in practitioners and agencies,a regulatory body had to be formed to standardize their practices.A meeting of the agencies held at Ebute Metta, Lagos in 1971 was to metamorphose into Association of Advertising Practitioners of Nigeria (AAPN) with the objective of protecting practitioners against unfavourable business. The association was later renamed Association of Advertising Agencies of Nigeria. The need to establish an institution to regulate advertising practice became apparent. In the 1990's the sector came alive,it began to to expand beyond advertising as full services public relation firms such as the Quadrant JSP and Quest were established. Of note is professionalizing the practice to ensure that qacks are reduced if not flushed out completely. 4. Advertising is said to be as old as man. Between the early 1960's and 1970'stwo ambitious agencies, Rosabel Advertising and Insight Communication, sprang up.The development of these two agencies brought new ideas into the Nigerian industry.. Before the turn of the decade, 23 agencies had been formed.AS the number of agencies in Nigeria began to increase, it was mandatory for associations to be formed to advance their common interests and a regulatory body to that would regulate and standardise advertising practice. An association known as AAPN(association of advertising practioners of Nigeria) was formed in 1971, at a meeting held at Ebute-metta,Lagos. Their function was to protect practitioners from unfavourable businesses. It was later renamed AAAN(Association of advertisers in Nigeria). The need to establish an institution to regulate advertising practice became apparent. This gave rise to the establishment of Advertising Parishioners Council of Nigeria (APCON) by Decree 55 of 1988, later renamed Act 55 of 1988 by the civilian administration on November 1989, the first meeting of the association held somewhere in Ebute-meta, Lagos finally culminated to the birth of APCON.OPeration began in 1990 with the employement of the pioneer registrar, prof. Charles Okigbo.privatization of mass communication medium in the 1990’s also witnessed the setting up of private owned media houses which are platforms for advertisement placements. Not long after this, Media Independent Practitioners Association of Nigeria (ADVAN), outdoor Advertising Association of Nigeria (OAAN) emerged. This brought about stiff competition and made each agency to want to be the best, so as to meet the challenge of modern day advertising.Competition became very stiff and practitioners started adopting unwholesome means to undercut one another. This was brought to the attention of the federal government, who encouraged the practitioners to find a way of resolving the perennial problem. As creativity took centre stage, the industry witnessed a lot of innovation and creative ideas.
That was how advertising began and is still going on strong in Nigeria.

Advertising has witnessed a great excellence in Nigeria it has always been going from good to better. Just as advertising has no beginning in America, Britain, and so on. So is it in Nigeria. It can be said that advertising started in Nigeria in 1949 and has being growing till date.
In 1980 Insight communication Limited, the advertising agency which was founded by Shobanjo, has continued to place an example in Nigeria's advertising.

In September 1984 Remi was born on the 18th day of September 1984 to an advertising practitioner and a civil engineer in respect of Mr. and Engr. (Mrs.) Mayen Adetiba respectively.
In November 13 1989 Association of the Advertising Practitioner Of Nigeria AAPN was changed to Advertising Practitioner Of Nigeria with the acronym APCON .
On the 15th of April 2010 it was said that facebook advertising Would be officially launched before the end of the month

  8. Advertising in Nigeria has taken gaint strides and has witnessed amazing growth. It is difficult to say when advertising began in Nigeria because advertising is as old as man. However, the recorded date when advertising started was in 1859, when Henry Townsend, the missionary from the Christian Missionary Service, used pamphlets to invite people to churcr. Also in 1859 his church established a newspaper called "Iwe Iroyin" this newspaper started the practise of advertising, but not for commercial benefits. However newspapers that followed in its departure took on advertising for commercial benefits.
The oil boom in the 1950s witnessed an increase in foreing investors as well as companies. These companies brought along their advertising sgencies. This began the process of advertising in Nigeria. In the 1970s government nationalized all industries and companies as such they had to be owned by Nigerians and this saw the rising up of many Indigenous advertising agencies such as Rosabell etc.
In 1988, the Advertsing Practitioners Council was established under decree 55 and later rebranded in 1990 under decree 92. This agency was responsible for regulating the practises of advertising practitioners in Nigeria as well as the issuing of Licenses to qualified practitioners. Otherc agencies have followed since they include- The Association Of Advertising agencies of Nigeria established in 1971 and so on.
Advertising today in Nigeria has risen beyond its humble beginig to become one of the largest industry of advertisers ijn Africa, competing on a global platform.

Advertisement did not only stop there with the advent of radio and television in the 1932 advertisement in Nigeria started as a means of communicating some certain information. The earliest advertising agencies in Nigeria is the West African Publicity Limited in 1928 which was an out shoot of U.A.C and DJ Keyner and company other agencies spooned up such as rosabell, goldman, sunrise, unitas and many other.
with this the need to regulate advertisement, advertisers and advertising agencies lead to the advent of different regulatory bodies such as O.A.A.N, A.P.C.O.N, A.A.A.N to help stabilize the growth of the advertising industry.

And with them, the boom in economy. Also Ad agencies increased at an alarming rate and ambitions agencies such as Prima Garnet, Sotu and Casesrs sprang up.Also the era witnessed the mad rush of foreign affiliations.
As the business expanded, related services providers joined the fray to cash in on the boom. Not long after they formed themselves into association to also further their cause and protect their interest. Media Independent Practitioners Association of Nigeria (ADVAN), outdoor Advertising Association of Nigeria (OAAN) emerged. Not long the industry became an all corners affairs.Competition became very stiff and practitioners started adopting unwholesome means to undercut one another.
As creativity took centre stage, the industry witnessed a lot of innovation and creative ideas. Several technical challenges will be overcome if the Internet is to continue growing at the current phenomenal rate.Today many people find it a little bit difficult and expensive to access the internet because of poor and limited service coverage. For example an average man who wants to surf the web today has to leave his house for the nearest cybercafe to browse which is not only inconvenient but it is also time consuming and expensive.
in 50years cybercafes will no longer be in existence as everybody will have free internet access anywhere and everywhere. many things will be done online for example schooling, business e.t.c. KUSA JESUTOBI OLUTOLA 09BE08963

Though advertising is as old as man, it could be traced in Nigeria in the year 1928 with the birth of West African Publicity Limited. The company was set up to cater for the marketing activities of the colonial masters in both Nigeria and West Africa. This company was later to transform to a full fledged advertising firm in 1929 known as Lintas with two other subsidiaries newly Afro media, the outdoor medium and Pearl/Dean, the cinema arm. The company enjoyed monopoly for a long time to come it was not until 1950’s when other advertising agencies started.
The four regions later set up their private stations pioneered by the West, at Ibadan, prior to independence. In 1960 and 1962 respectively, Enugu and Kaduna followed suit.
Between the early 1960’s and 1970, there was no spectacular development in the industry. The promulgation of Nigeria Enterprises as promotion Decree of 1972 popularly known as Indigenization policy ushered in a new phase in the industry.
By the later 1970’s, two ambitious agencies, Rosabel Advertising and Insight Communication, emerged. The coming of the two agencies brought new ideas into the industry while taking creativity to a higher. Before the turn of the decade, 23 agencies had been formed. With the steady growth in the number of practitioners and agencies, the association of advertising practitioners of Nigeria (AAPN) was formed in the year 1971and in 1989; the advertising practitioner council of Nigeria (APCON) was formed.
The era of economic restructuring and liberalization opened up the Nigerian business to global economy. Aside, privatization of mass communication medium in the 1990’s witnessed the setting up of private owned media houses which are platforms for advertisement placements.

  28. As it was earlier discussed in class, Advertising is as old as man himself. In Nigeria, the trade by barter means was a well noted way of advertising. In places like the North, people gave out their young Daughters for marriage to get gold or very expensive textile materials. Advertising in Nigeria is said to have taken kick off with the birth of "Iwe Irohin fun Awon Egba ati Yoruba" in the year 1859 by an Anglican Reverend called Reverend Henry Townsend of the Christian Missionary Service; the nespaper carried Advertisements of Birhs, Deaths and Scholarships for those who wanted to go to school. Also Robert Campbell's Newspaper Anglo African had a number of Advertisements published its the pages. Other subsequent Newspapers also had a number of Adverts on their pages. With the advent af Television and Radio in 1932, Advertisements/Commercials in Nigeria became common place. Early Advertising practices (via the Media) in Nigeria was carried out by foreign advertising agencies firstly with D J Kemer & Company and the West African Publicity Limited. During the period of 1960 and 1970, so many foreign investors paid business visits to the country for the sole aim of Advertising-this meant that so many foreign investors took part actively in the Advertising Industry in nigeria. Also, during this period, there four major Advertising companies that sprung up. they are 1)The Lintas
    2)Rosabelle
    3)Sunrise and
    4)Afro-media.
Later in the year 1972, a Decree was passed that enabled only Nigerians control advertising and this brought about Indigenous Advertising Investors in Nigeria.
As time went on, the Advertisers in Nigeria became so many that the government had to regulate the Advertising Industry and it gave birth to a body known as Association of Advertising Practitioners in Nigeria(AAPN) but the activities if this association came to a halt when it was rebranded in 1988 with the birth of Advertising Practitioners' Council of Nigeria (APCON)-this was established under the Decree 55 of 1988. till date APCON is the body that regulates the Advertising Industry.

Though advertisement could be said to have started from the time man came to existence for the purpose of living in terms of the way they got their food and other material things which they needed. it could be traced to many sources like the time of the trade and barter, or could be traced to the time Nigeria was still a colony of the British.
advertisement can also be said to have started from the time of the news paper called 'iwe iroyin' in 1859 by Henry Townsend.
Advertisement can be traced to the colonial period when the west African Publicity Limited was set to enhance the colonial masters business. it was after this that other organizations were formed.

The roots of advertising was embedded in the newspaper business in Nigeria which can be traced to the middle of the nineteenth century. The primary goal of newspapers then was to influence the literacy rate of the population. Foreign owned newspapers quickly emerged as an avenue for readers to self educate themselves and also as a tool of the mercantile traders to read about trade related ads or to advertise their goods. The success of the early newspapers was linked to the competence of its writers and editors, political appeal, patronage by local administrators and the financial purse of the owners. However, fluctuating subscriber revenues by the 1920s led to a greater dependency on advertisement, with about 50-70% of pages devoted to ads [3] but most of it was related to merchandise goods. By 1943, a strategy to increase revenues led to the introduction of classified ads mostly covering one page. It wasn't until the establishment of two politically inspired newspapers, the West African Pilot in 1939 and the Nigerian Tribune in 1949, did newspapers began to devote more space to personality profiles.

The publication carried an advert in the form of an announcement for the Anglican Church.West African Publicity Limited then came up in 1929. Thereafter, foreign advertising agencies came up with the leading agency as D.J Keymer and company. 46. We can say that advertising is as old as man. Advertising in Nigeria has witnessed a lot of changes over the years. The beginning of advertising is rooted in colonial history. People advertised their products through trade by barter. The colonial newspapers especially the ones by Reverend Henry Townsend{Iwe Iroyin-1859} also aided in building advertisement in Nigeria. As years passed, UAC was made to cater for the marketing activities of the colonial masters in both Nigeria and West Africa.Later on, this company was changed to a full advertising firm and Lintas emerged with 2 subsidiaries newly Afro media, the outdoor medium and Pearl/Dean, the cinema arm.
The medium of advertisement was in its infancy by this time. Federal government owned National Broadcasting Corporation(NBC) were the only TV stations and was located in the East, West, North and later in the midwest. These places later started their own.
During the administration of Alhaji Sehu Shagari, more states were created and they owned their own TV and radio stations.
Between 1960's and 1970,there was no spectacular development but the promulgation of Nigeria Enterprises as promotion Decree of1972(Indegenization Policy) changed this. The 1st indegenenous Chief Executive of Lintas encouraged Nigerian's to engage in advertisement as a business. By late 1970's,Rosabel Advertising and Insight Communication came up and they are still in existence. Not too long, 23 agencies were formed.
A meeting of the agencies held at Ebute Metta, Lagos in 1971 formed Association of Advertising Practitioners of Nigeria(AAPN) with the aim of protecting practitioners against unfavorable business. It was later called Association of Advertising Agencies of Nigeria. As many people decided to go into advertising, there was a need to establish an institution to regulate advertising practice.
This gave rise to the establishment of Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria(APCON) by Decree 55 of 1988 later Act 55 of 1988 by the civilian administration and in November 1989 the 1st meeting held in Ebute Metta. APCON started operations in 1990 with the employment of the pioneer registrar-Dr. Charles Okigbo.
From this point, the advertising sector improved a great deal. Today, Nigeria's advertising industry is making efforts to ensure that they measured up to global industry pratice. From foreign adverts.it now does its own advert. locally and injects a lot of local content in the campaign.

Advertising in Nigeria began with the establishment of the first newspaper in Nigeria which was “Iwe Irohin” in 1859 by Reverend Henry Townsend. Iwe Irohin mostly carried advertisements on births, weddings, deaths, as well as social events. Unfortunately, the paper ran for only eight years and eventually crashed in 1867. Due to the emergence of radio in Nigeria in the year 1932, the business of advertising in Nigeria further kept growing stronger with the introduction of television in the country. Then advertising agencies were established. Early advertising agencies at that time which were foreign advertising agencies include Kenmers, the West African Publicity ltd, which were the leading advertising agencies. Others include; Goldman, Sunrise, Rosabell etc. Ad agencies were owned by foreigners because of the shift in interest from agriculture to crude oil which brought in foreign investors. Nevertheless, advertising businesses began to be controlled by Nigerians due to the enhancement of the Nigerian enterprise promotion decree of 1972. From then onwards, advertising in Nigeria became a body with numerous networks and with the emergence of regulatory bodies such as Advertisers practitioners council of Nigeria (APCON) adverts in Nigeria are checked so as not to be offensive to viewers.

Nigeria had a humble background in advertising. Advertising was incorporated by the British during the years of colonialism. Advertising began professionally in 1928 and this was made possible through the immense contribution of west African publicity limited. Their aim was to meet the marketing needs of the British who were colonizing Africa. WAPL metamorphosed into a major advertising agency in Nigeria in 1929 and it also changed its name to lintas that same year. Lintas had affiliate with Afro media and pearl /dean company. Their objective was to bring up a breeding ground for the upcoming advertising agencies in Nigeria which was later manifested in the early 1950’s. The likes of Benson and Martha (OBM), Grant, and Ogilvy formed ‘The big three in Nigeria’. The years 1960 and 1962 there was an influx of radio and television stations which encouraged advertising in Nigeria. The 1972 decree gave birth to the promulgation of Nigerian enterprises which was fondly called the’ Indigenization policy’. This decree changed the advertising phase in Nigeria and business ideas were promoted by Lintas Company that gave it an edge over other advertising company in Nigeria. In the late’s 1970 two competitive companies came on board in the business of advertising. They were Rosabel advertising and Insight communication which swept advertising up its feet and took it to a next level through creativity and innovation in Nigeria. The emergence of regulatory bodies made better advertising to become best advertising in Nigeria and some of them are: Advertising practitioners council of Nigeria (APCON), Association of advertising practitioners in Nigeria (AAPN)etc.Advertising is 47 in Nigeria and is still flourishing.

With the setting up of the companies then headed by expatriates, the companies were to enjoy a monopoly for a long time to come it was not until 1950’s when other advertising agencies started to emerge on the scene.
Between the early 1960’s and 1970, there was no spectacular development in the industry. But the promulgation of Nigeria Enterprises as promotion Decree of 1972 popularly known as Indigenization policy rushed in a new phase in the industry. The policy stated that advertising companies had to be owned by nigerians. Mr Silvester, Muoemeka was by the dictates of the policy to emerge the first indigenous chief executive of Lintas. Lintas further empowered more Nigerians to take up the business of advertising some of whom had to leave broadcasting to embrace the new thinking.

  56. Advertising serve as a communication tool to a mass amount of people in an attempt to convince them to take a certain action, such as encouraging 'environmentally friendly' behaviors, and even unhealthy behaviors through food consumption, video game and television viewing promotion, and a "lazy man" routine through a loss of exercise. Without too much advertising in Nigeria is said to have started with the birth of "Iwe Irohin" in the year 1859 Reverend Henry Townsend of the Christian Missionary Service. Later in the year 1972, a Decree was passed that enabled only Nigerians control advertising and this brought about Indigenous Advertising Investors in Nigeria.
As time went on, the Advertisers in Nigeria became so many that the government had to regulate the Advertising Industry and it gave birth to a body known as Association of Advertising Practitioners in Nigeria(AAPN) but the activities if this association came to a halt when it was changed in 1988 with the birth of 'Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria'(APCON), this was established under the Decree 55 of 1988, till date APCON is the body that regulates the Advertising Industry.

The roots of the newspaper business which led to advertisement in Nigeria can be traced to the middle of the nineteenth century.
However, fluctuating subscriber revenues by the 1920s led to a greater dependency on advertisement, with about 50-70% of pages devoted to ads but most of it was related to merchandise goods.

During the period of 1960 & 1970, there were a lot of foreign investorsin the advertising industry in Nigeria. Many advertising agenciessuch as Afromedia, Lyntax, Rosabell, Goldmark and Sunrise emerged . This occured due to the shift of givernment interest from agriculture to crude oil and led the economy to depend on foreign firms, and seeing that these firms needeed agencies to to promote thier goods and services, the above mentioned agencies were established.

According to the Nigerian enterprise Promotion Decree of 1992, advertising business in Nigeria could only be owned and controlled by a Nigerian.

These regions later set up their private stations pionered by the West, at Ibadan, prior to independence. In 1960 and 1962 respectively, Enugu and Kaduna followed suit. And with the creation of more regions by the General Yakubu Gowon (rtd) administration and creation of more states by both Alhaji Shehu Shagari and Ibrahim Babangida regimes, more state government-owned television and radio stations were established.By the later 1970’s however, two ambitious agencies, Rosabel Advertising and Insight Communication, sprang up. The coming of the two agencies which till today are still doing very well, no doubt, was a watershed in the industry of advertising in Nigeria as the agencies brought new ideas into the industry while taking creativity to a higher. Before the turn of the decade, 23 agencies had been formed.

With the steady growth in the number of practitioners and agencies arose the need for associations to be formed to advance their common interests and a regulatory body to that would regulate and standardize advertising practice. A meeting of the agencies held at Ebute Metta, Lagos in 1971 was to metamorphose into Association of Advertising Practitioners of Nigeria (AAPN) with the objective of protecting practitioners against unfavourable business. The association was later renamed Association of Advertising Agencies of Nigeria. As the industry continued to grow in volume of business and complexity, more and more people were attracted to the industry. The need to establish an institution to regulate advertising practice became apparent. This gave rise to the establishment of Advertising Parishioners Council of Nigeria (APCON) by Decree 55 of 1988, later renamed Act 55 of 1988 by the civilian administration on November 1989, the first meeting of the association held somewhere in Ebute-meta, Lagos finally culminated to the birth of APCON.
