Public relations practise in Nigeria began with the establishment of the "Iwe irohin " news paper by Henry townsend of the Christian Missionary Service (CMS) in 1859, this paper was what brough about a baic awareness of what public relations was about, the paper was active in advertising of births, funeral notices and so on. Public Relations was fully initiated by the British during the colonial era. The British were seeking for ways to convince Nigerians of the advantages of colonial rule because of the efforts of nationalists to stir up the fight for independence in the public so the British decided to employ the tactics of Public relations, through mobile cinemas, posters, television programmes and so on. These programmes were aimed at sensitizing Nigerians on what the colonialists were doing for the benefit of the nation as well as what the colonialists expected of Nigerians in return. this system worked very well. In 1949 United African Company became the first company in Nigeria to have a public information unit. This followed by the establishment of Public Relations unit by the Nigerian Railway Coporation in 1956 where Dr Samuel Opele served as the first Public Relations Officer. From then on other companies followed suite. In 1963 the Nigerian institute of Public Relations (NIPR) was established as a regulatory body for PR practise in Nigeria.

Public relations is about reputation - the result of what you do, what you say and what others say about you.Public relations is the discipline which looks after reputation, with the aim of earning understanding and support and influencing opinion and behaviour. It is the planned and sustained effort to establish and maintain goodwill and mutual understanding between an organisation and its publics. Public Relations in Nigeria started during the colonization of Nigeria by the British. It actually started during Nationalism to be precise. The Nationalists were steering the hearts and minds of the people away from the Colonial masters with what they published in the papers and the British tried to curb this by setting up departments in the North, West and East. These offices put together documentaries that showcased what the Colonial masters had done which included building of schools, bridges, roads and so on. The documentaries also helped to showcase Nigeria to the world and to Nigerians and its sole aim was to make the Colonial masters look good in the eyes of the people and justify the reasons why they were still being colonized.

public relations in Nigeria like some of my colleagues have stated above started during the period of the Colonial war (early 1850's). But that was when it was first recognized as such. It first started when the colonialists had issues with the nationalists in the country. The colonialists then decided to use punlic relations to make peace with the nationalists since it worked with them in their country and Africa wss not as civilized as them then. They established a public relations department in Lagos which was meant to inform the public about the "good" intentions of the government at that time.

AJAYI INIOLUWA. ENGLISH LANGUAGE. 09BC08895 Public Relations in Nigeria started with the advent of the Christian Missionary Society (CMS) in 1859 with the publication of the first newspaper in Nigeria "Iwe Irohin", a news journal that performed PR function by giving up to date information about missionary activities, socio-economic and political activities affecting Anglican parishioners, Abeokuta citizens and Europeans, colonial administration and foreign events. Iwe Irohin also advertised trade products, goods and services, made public announcements and provided business news and trade information to the readers and coastal traders ranging from economic matters on trade to prices, rates and value of produce. The newspaper presented opinions, debatesand discussions on local and international matters, enlightening and educating the public through information dissemination which is a major role of Public Relations. In the 1932, "PR Broadcasting" emerged in Nigeria. The British Government employed the Radio Distribution Services in England to relay specific British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) programs to Nigerians through the Radio Rediffusion Sysytem (RDS) so as to counter boiling European sentiments, redeem their own battered image as an imperialist government and promote their own interests, counter-acting propaganda campaign in neighboring West-African countries and shutting the mouths of the educated elites that clamored for Nigeria's independence from the British. This transformed into the hallmark of political propaganda for the British imperialist government and they gained sympathy of the Nigerians and changed their attitudes through the new broadcasting technology. After the Second World War, in 1939, European powers attempted to influence and alter the opinions of Africans, urging Nigerians to support the Germans. The British countered this swiftly through the establishment of the first Information Centre in Lagos and other cities in Nigeria to handle information between the troops and their families back home through leaflets and pamphlets that displayed social, economic and political tribulations likely to befall Nigerians if the Germans won the war. In addition, other tools of propaganda were employed to gain local support for the British colonialist government.e.g: newsreels, newspaper advertisements and postcards of the successful exploits of the British and the allied troops, radio broadcasts by BBC and films and cinemas such as "The Guns of the Desert", mobilizing support for the war. Time and limited space would not let me go on but i will end with this: Public Relations in Nigeria went on to be a means of public information through its involvement with the public and private sectors with the aim of changing the attitude of the Nigerian public towards a particular subject.

Historically, Nigeria has boasted the most free and outspoken press of any African country, but also one which has consistently been the target of harassment by the past military dictatorships and now under the governance of Nigeria's current civilian president, Umaru Musa Yar'adua. Many agents of Nigeria's press have been imprisoned, exiled, tortured, or murdered as a result, among them being Ogoni activist and television producer Ken Saro-Wiwa, who was executed for treason by order of the Sani Abacha dictatorship in 1995 (resulting in the expulsion of Nigeria from the Commonwealth of Nations and sanctions from abroad).
Even under the somewhat less-oppressive current civilian government, journalists have continued to come under fire, be it from the government (as with the June 2006 arrest of Gbenga Aruleba and Rotimi Durojaiye of African Independent Television under charges of sedition) or from other popular establishments (such as the self-imposed exile of Thisday's Isioma Daniel following the riots in Northern Nigeria over "sensitive comments" which she had made in an article regarding Muhammad and the 2002 Miss World pageant; a fatwa calling for her beheading was issued by the mullahs of northern Nigeria, but was declared null and void by the relevant religious authorities in Saudi Arabia, and the Obasanjo faced an international public relations smearing [especially within journalistic circles) in the aftermath, which was not helped by the Amina Lawal controversy which had occurred prior to the riots, which had seen over 200 dead). However, as with most other countries, blogging has increasingly become a much safer, and much easier, conduit for Nigeria's growing Internet-enabled minority to express their dissatisfactions with the current state of affairs in Nigeria.

Folafunmi Afolabi-09BE08937 Colonialism (that began in the 19th century) led to the establishment of Public relations in Nigeria. The nationalists such as Obafemi Awolowo, Nnamdi Azikwe and others fought for independence from the British. They used newspapers to confront the colonialists. In order to achieve these, public relations offices were set up in Lagos. There were frequent Temne attacks, and few marriageable women and inadequate land for cultivation.3 From the 1840s many of the Yoruba settlers began demanding that they be allowed to return to their original homes. Other factors may be advanced to account for this. First, there was a feeling of patriotism and concern at the news they heard about the ongoing wars in their homeland, which produced a wish to be reunited with their kin. Also, some of them had become successful businessmen, owning ships and trading vessels with which they traded on the west African coast and in the interior. Success was an added motivation. On the other hand, those who were less successful sought their fortunes outside the limits they experienced in the colonies. Many of these were new converts and had a messianic motivation to spread their newly-acquired values of Christianity and civilization.

The colonialist set up a public relations department in the northern, eastern and western provinces. The aim of its creation was to tell the citizens what the government was doing and vice versa, announce Nigeria to Nigerians and the entire world, provide the people with cultural and educational values. After the tenure of the colonialist, the message of public relations was clear and was put to tremendous use in consolidating the socio-economic and political gains of independence. This era led to the decree no. 16 of June 1, 1990 which birthed the Nigerian Institute of public relations. Public relations became very effective after this.

In Nigeria, as a result of the colonial era, and movements by nationalists for freedom and self governance from the colonial masters, this brought about the advent of public relations in Nigeria. the British administrators were attacked by nationalist actions and activities, as they had published formidable newspapers, and this made the administrators to see the importance of public relations as they usually involved it in major cases in their home town.
this spurred the establishment of a public relations officer to foster a two way communication between the colonialists and their subjects. the colonialists set up a public relations department in Lagos, with outlets in northern, eastern and western regions.. The Department was to do the following: (a) tell the people what the government was doing and what it (the public) was supposed to do, (b) publicize Nigeria to Nigerians and to the world, (c) provide the people with cultural values and education, especially in the field which the ordinary newspapers have not the facilities. These functions were performed through the use of such channels as mobile cinema vans, newspapers, face to face communication and feedback through the same process. When the colonialists left, the message of what public relations can do at war and at peace was clear and PR was put to good use in consolidating the socioeconomic and political gains of independence. . The Nationalists as at that time tried to tried to make the Nations understand why they should not be colonized by turning their hearts against the Colonialists provided the people with cultural values and education so that they may please the indegenes.
The colonialists went ahead to create sub-units in the Northern, Eastern and Western Region. These units that were set up were to tell the Government what to do and what not to do in other words, they were supposed to advice the Government. The sole aim of creating this units was to publicize to Nigerians and to the world at large.

public relations in Nigeria like some of my colleagues have stated above started during the period of the Colonial war (early 1850's).

ReplyDeletePublic Relations in Nigeria started with the advent of the Christian Missionary Society (CMS) in 1859 with the publication of the first newspaper in Nigeria "Iwe Irohin", a news journal that performed PR function by giving up to date information about missionary activities, socio-economic and political activities affecting Anglican parishioners, Abeokuta citizens and Europeans, colonial administration and foreign events. Time and limited space would not let me go on but i will end with this: Public Relations in Nigeria went on to be a means of public information through its involvement with the public and private sectors with the aim of changing the attitude of the Nigerian public towards a particular subject.

there is a limited understanding of the developmental and historical use of public relations tools such as marketing PR, media relations, financial and consumer PR. Also there is limited information on how the use of PR developed amongst non-governmental organisations. It would therefore be educative to commission another study that will undertake a comprehensive research into this aspect of the Nigerian public relations history. This limitation provides an opportunity for future research.

ReplyDeleteHistorically, Nigeria has boasted the most free and outspoken press of any African country, but also one which has consistently been the target of harassment by the past military dictatorships and now under the governance of Nigeria's current civilian president, Umaru Musa Yar'adua.
ReplyDeleteEven under the somewhat less-oppressive current civilian government, journalists have continued to come under fire, be it from the government (as with the June 2006 arrest of Gbenga Aruleba and Rotimi Durojaiye of African Independent Television under charges of sedition) or from other popular establishments (such as the self-imposed exile of Thisday's Isioma Daniel following the riots in Northern Nigeria over "sensitive comments" which she had made in an article regarding Muhammad and the 2002 Miss World pageant; a fatwa calling for her beheading was issued by the mullahs of northern Nigeria, but was declared null and void by the relevant religious authorities in Saudi Arabia, and the Obasanjo faced an international public relations smearing [especially within journalistic circles) in the aftermath, which was not helped by the Amina Lawal controversy which had occurred prior to the riots, which had seen over 200 dead). However, as with most other countries, blogging has increasingly become a much safer, and much easier, conduit for Nigeria's growing Internet-enabled minority to express their dissatisfactions with the current state of affairs in Nigeria.

The nationalists such as Obafemi Awolowo, Nnamdi Azikwe and others fought for independence from the British. They used newspapers to confront the colonialists. The British with the aim of telling the people what the government was doing with a means of feedback, announce Nigeria to Nigerians and the world, provide the people with cultural and educational values which are all characteristics of public relations by setting up information/public relations offices in the three provinces(north, east and west)with an office in Lagos. later, public relations practices became more popular and used and due to its growth, we can then talk about events like the establishment of a P.R.department in U.A.C.After the leave of the British colonialists, through the Act of Law Decree 16 of 1990, the Nigerian Institute Of Public Relations was established.

ReplyDeleteThe history of public relations in Nigeria can be traced back to colonial era. The nationalists attacked the British administrators with the newspapers that were produced then, e.g. Iwe Iroyin by Rev. Henry Townsend in 1859. The British Administrators used public relations to calm down the crisis the aim was to promote a two way communication between the colonialists and their subjects.
Based on this, a PR department was set up in Lagos with other units in the east and west. The aim of its creation was to tell the citizens what the government was doing and vice versa, announce Nigeria to Nigerians and the entire world, provide the people with cultural and educational values. All these gave birth to the Nigerian institute of public relations on the first of June 1990 under the Act of Law of Decree No. 16.

to publicise nigeria all over the world and also to teach nigeria. and also to provide cultural value.

The history of public relations in Nigeria can be traced down to the colonial era during the rigorous activities of the nationalist for freedom and self governance from the British rule. The colonialist set up a public relationsdepartment in the nothern, eastern and western provinces. After the tenure of the colonialist, the message of public relations was clear and was put to tremendous use in consolidating the socio-economic and political gains of independence. This era led to the decree no. 16 of June 1, 1990 which birthed the Nigerian Institute of public relations. Public relations became very effective after this.
Public Relations started in Nigeria during the colonial era with the intensive activities of nationalists for freedom and self governance from the British rule. Attacked from all sides by the formidable newspapers established by the Nationalists, the British administrators recalled the effective use of public relations campaigns organized in their home country to solve such major issues. Based on this, an Information/Public Relations Office was established. Newspapers like the iwe Iroyin and the likes also where seen with adverts and all of that which are all strategies in Public relations so the history can be traced mainly to the colonialist.

MATRIC NO 09BC08916.The abolition of the Atlantic Slave Trade in the British Isles in 1807, and slavery itself in 1833, led to the establishment of Sierra Leone for the settlement of freed slaves. These were not just slaves that were liberated in Europe and the Americas, but also those rescued on the high seas by the [End Page 295] British naval anti-slave trade squadron. The organization of the colonies was not altogether satisfactory to many of the liberated slaves.

ReplyDeletethe public relations practice in Nigeria, which started before the country’s independence.public relations practice commenced in the country in the early 1940s as a result of World War II. The country, which was then under the British colony, participated in the execution of the war. Knowing the importance of information to Nigerians on happenings in the war front, the government created a Special Information Centre for that purpose. With this, there was better understanding between the colonialists and the colonised Nigerians, especially, when the citizenry realised the necessity of their independence. In the private sector, the first company to establish a public relations department was the United African Company, popularly known as UAC. The unit was known in 1949 as Information Department. The Nigerian Railways Corporation, a government parastatal, also established its own unit in 1956 where Dr. Sam Opelle served as the first public relations officer. The Shell Petroleum Development Company, then BP, created its own outfit in 1969

ReplyDeletePublic Relation is very old,it is not an invention. Mankind has always tried to communicate and make himself understood thereby involving himself consciously or sub consciously in PR activities.
PR activities in Nigeria during the times of colonization. The British colonized Nigeria and in a bid to make themselves understood and create mutual understanding between both parties, they appointed officers or people who understood the Britons and the Nigerians very well enough to help create a strong mutual understanding between them.
